The New Church

Before the construction of is building and dedication on November 29, 1904, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church held its Sunday School in the Bay Head school house from about 1891. The lot on the corner of Bridge and West Lake Avenues was purchased for $150, and with the donation of bricks for building the foundation, the townspeople set about constructing the church (then called the Bay Head Chapel). There was a large stove with a metal casing to heat the church and an Estey pump organ, a pointed arch and stained glass windows, as seen in this painting.
The church grew and so did its building, and in 1950 a new tower was added on the West Lake Avenue side of the church, replacing a belfry and bell above the Bridge Avenue entrance. In 1968 the church moved its entrance to the West Lake Avenue side, where it is now, and replaced the old tower.
After Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012, St. Paul’s kept its doors open, feeding over 200 people daily, and serving as a town center for many months of recovery.
