The Cycling Craze

In the late 1900s, Central Market was called Chadwick’s Grocery, but it is still located on the corner of Main Ave (Rte 35) and Mount Street in Bay Head. The grocery store was built by Captain Elijah Chadwick in the early 1880s. (See Captain Chadwick’s House painting). Charlie Wing’s Hand Laundry was in the building on the left, which is now part of the Market. The beautiful balcony is now gone. One of the 19th century crazes was cycling. In five days in 1896 the Manasquan River bridge tender clocked an average of 567 bike crossings per day! The artist enjoyed the challenge of painting various bicycles of that era and only regretted not putting more in. The busy cycling shop on Mount Street, once the home of the Anchor & Palette Gallery (owned by the artist), is still a gallery.
