The CoasterThe schooners that sailed the east-coast shipping lanes in the days of sail were called Coasters. They were essential before the railroads came, but still were a common sight well into the 20th century. The artist writes this about his painting: "When I saw the standing figure of the young woman with the umbrella, in a photo in the Library of Congress collection, I was determined to star her in a painting (a few other figures are from the same photo). I decided she'd be looking at a sailing ship, one of the "coasters" that plied their trade a century ago. Since no one else in the scene is paying any attention to this common-place sight, I imagine the captain is her husband--better still, her fiancé." Image size: 13x19. Giclee print.
