Spring Lake, 1904

In a disastrous fire in 1900, the old Monmouth House was destroyed, along with a lot of the rest of Spring Lake. Four years later, they built the New Monmouth Hotel (shown here) on the same site, at the eastern end of the lake. It, too, is now gone, replaced by a flock of houses. Rather than devise a huge reflection in the lake, the artist tried for the shimmering effect of bright sunlight and a light breeze across the water’s surface. Imagine painting all those windows!
