September Beach

The artist loved to draw old-fashioned girls on bicycles. Here are five of them, pumping into the wind, led by a tern. The picnickers originated from a source of the same in a field, but LaBonte often moved his sources from other places to the beach, to fit in his imaginary scenes. A challenge for this painting was adding a more realistic surf, rather than his primitive style. This is why LaBonte referred to his style as "neo-primitive."
