Rising Tide

The artist often used old black and white photographs as the source of his inspiration. This scene was from an old photo made in Northumberland, England, about 1906. He substituted the dunes and the Victorian house for the high coastal fortress that was in the background. Then he faced the challenge of capturing the effect of the shallow incoming tide - clear water over visible sand, using glazes over dark colors.
