Essex & SussexIn its heyday, the Essex and Sussex reigned as one of the area’s grand hotels. Built in 1914, the hotel, located on Ocean Avenue in Spring Lake, New Jersey, was considered to be its crown jewel, attracting royalty, high society, the rich and famous and even a president or two. For decades, the Essex and Sussex was the destination for wealthy shore visitors of all ages. Sitting directly across the street from the ocean and the boardwalk, it features commanding water views of the Atlantic Ocean and the lake, for which the town is named. This painting is of the Essex and Sussex set in 1923, when the grand beach front hotels were in their prime. Cars pictured left to right are: a Dodge, a Brewster, a Daniels, a Checker Cab, a Willis Sainte Claire, and a Chevrolet Coupe. The Essex & Sussex is one of the few old hotels still standing, and is now an adult community, broken up into condominiums. Image size: 15x19. Giclee print. Open edition. Unsigned. $125 |
