Big Sea Day, Manasquan

Since the 1800s, farmers from surrounding areas came to Squan Beach on the second Saturday of every August in order to enjoy a day at the sea. This day was known as "Big Sea Day," and the people enjoyed food, drinking, music and dancing. This tradition was carried on by great numbers of visitors until the time of the automobile. While celebration of the day continued as a community tradition, part of its significance was lost. At that point, the beaches became more easily accessible to visitors on a regular basis, making the reservation of a special holiday unnecessary. The town of Manasquan has revived Big Sea Day and it's celebrated every year now with a variety of activities.
