A Rainy Day at the SeashoreTo generations of kids, a rainy day at the seashore meant an afternoon at the Lorraine Theater in Bay Head. The floor was sticky from sweets bought at Ortley’s next door, and they said your feet would get wet in the front row at high tide. At first (1917) it was a roofless theater. You saw the silents under the stars. After a destructive storm in 1920 it was rebuilt and became the popular theater shown in this painting. The Calvin Applegate family managed it for years. In the 1970s it became a mini-mall called The Shopper’s Wharf, and in 2012 Hurricane Sandy destroyed enough of the building to generate the decision to tear it down. Completely rebuilt and upgraded, it is now Charlie’s of Bay Head, a beautiful restaurant and bar overlooking Twilight Lake. Image size: 10x14. Giclee print. Limited edition of 150. Unsigned. $100 |
